U.N. Trying to Hold Israel Accountable For War Crimes?!

(VitalNews.org) – The U.N. Human Rights Council has come up with a resolution that would hold Israel accountable for war crimes and crimes against humanity for the violence occurring in Gaza.

The UNHRC vote is yet another for a resolution regarding the ongoing war in Gaza. Twenty-eight countries voted for the resolution, thirteen countries abstained, and six countries voted against the resolution, including the United States.

The resolution stated the emphasis on “the need to ensure accountability for all violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law in order to end impunity.” It referenced a “grave concern at reports of serious human rights violations and grave breaches of international humanitarian law, including of possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in the occupied Palestinian territory”.

The resolution came not long after a phone call between United States President Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu. The call was mainly Biden explaining the push for Israel to change their approach in order to receive aid. Following this, Israel reopened the Erez crossings and temporary use of the Ashdod port, two actions that aid agencies have been requesting.

Biden also asked Netanyahu to have a more flexible stance when it came to negotiating the release of hostages, and, for the first time ever, Biden said that Netanyahu should accept an immediate ceasefire. Prior to this, the United States voted against or chose not to vote for an immediate ceasefire resolution.
