Gang violence explodes in a Georgia state prison, killing three inmates, including one days from release, exposing dangerous failures in a system crippled by understaffing and broken security.
Story Snapshot
- Three inmates were dead, and 13 were hospitalized after a massive gang fight at Washington State Prison in Davisboro, Georgia, on Sunday.
- One corrections officer was injured; inmates breached the visitation area with makeshift weapons like clubs.
- Chronic issues plague the facility:a 1,000-guard shortage, faulty locks allowing free movement, and soaring homicides from gang black markets.
- DOJ report slams “deliberately indifferent” conditions; family of victim days from release demands accountability.
- Prison is on lockdown as GDC investigates amid calls for real reforms to protect guards and restore order.
Details of the Deadly Clash
A large-scale fight broke out Sunday in an outdoor area of Washington State Prison, a medium-security facility housing 1,550 male offenders, 130 miles southeast of Atlanta. Around 20 inmates clashed using makeshift clubs and other weapons during visitation hours. Injured fighters breached the visitor zone, forcing evacuation.
Guards deployed non-lethal weapons and restored order in 90 minutes, but two inmates died on site, with a third succumbing later. The Georgia Department of Corrections confirmed the gang affiliation on Monday.
Victims included Jimmy Lee Trammell, 42, serving time for burglary and stabbed days before his Wednesday release; Ahmod Dewayne Hatcher, 23, for aggravated assault; and Teddy Dewayne Jackson, 27, also for aggravated assault.
Michelle Lett, Trammell’s aunt, blasted prison laxity, saying guards “weren’t trying to stop nothing.” Local responders including Davisboro Police Chief Leondus Dixon, Washington County Sheriff Mark Hodges, and Georgia State Patrol secured the scene by 6 p.m. Sunday.
Systemic Failures Fueling Prison Chaos
Washington State Prison grapples with entrenched gang control over black markets for drugs, weapons, drones, and smartphones. A 2024 DOJ report exposed “deliberately indifferent” conditions, including unchecked violence, extortion, sexual abuse, and homicide surges from 7 in 2018 to 35 in 2023, 66 in 2024, and on track for more in 2025.
Post-COVID guard resignations left GDC 1,000 short despite $600 million in hiring funds. Broken cell-door locks permit inmate movement and ambushes, with repairs years away.
State Rep. Billy Hitchens highlighted lock-jamming risks in a December hearing. Expert Bryce Peterson of the Center for Naval Analyses labeled the incident “collective violence or riot” due to its scale, weapons, and deaths, stemming from faction tensions in understaffed yards where safeguards collapse. Prior inmate video from December 13 captured similar violence at the facility.

GDC Response and Ongoing Probe
GDC Commissioner Tyrone Oliver acknowledged staffing woes but denied rights violations, pinning issues on pandemic fallout. The prison remains locked down with 12-13 inmates hospitalized and one guard hurt, injury details unclear.
Police Chief Dixon stated that GDC leads the investigation, supported by local agencies. No new public updates emerged by Monday afternoon. Families and advocates like the Human and Civil Rights Coalition of Georgia, which shared inmate videos, demand accountability.
This riot underscores national prison vulnerabilities, especially in medium-security settings where gangs exploit weaknesses. Short-term lockdowns strain operations while long-term fixes like lock replacements and staffing could cost millions more.
Political pressure mounts on Oliver from lawmakers like Hitchens. Eroded public trust highlights the need for tough, common-sense reforms prioritizing guard safety and curbing gang power without coddling criminals.
