A community is grappling with the tragic news that the body of a young hiker was discovered off-trail just a day after she vanished.

The death of 31-year-old hiker Hannah Moody in Arizona’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve has law enforcement searching for answers after her body was found 600 yards off-trail.

While police say there are no obvious signs of foul play, the sudden disappearance and death of this otherwise healthy young woman has raised concerns about trail safety and emergency response protocols.

Moody was last seen at the Gateway Trailhead area of the preserve this week, before friends reported her missing that evening when they could not reach her.

Her vehicle was discovered in the trailhead parking lot, but all attempts to contact her by phone were unsuccessful, prompting immediate concern from authorities.

Initial search efforts began immediately, and a coordinated response included foot patrols, drone surveillance, and assistance from a Phoenix Police Department helicopter.

Despite these efforts, darkness forced authorities to temporarily suspend the search at 11:30 p.m. before resuming with additional resources the following morning.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Air Unit made the grim discovery around noon on May 22, approximately 16 hours after Moody was first reported missing.

Her body was found in a location that raised questions about how she ended up so far off the established trail system.

While the investigation continues, Scottsdale police noted that Moody’s disappearance was described as unexpected and uncharacteristic.

Friends reportedly became concerned when the typically reliable Moody failed to respond to calls and messages.

“Tragically, Hannah’s body was located by search crews. Our hearts go out to her family and friends,” Scottsdale police said on X.

“This is an active investigation. Please respect the family’s privacy at this time. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in helping to locate Hannah,” it continued.

The search involved a joint effort between the Scottsdale Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and Phoenix Police Department, highlighting the seriousness with which authorities took her disappearance.

Scottsdale detectives and crime scene personnel are investigating the scene and circumstances thoroughly.

Law enforcement officials have been careful to note that while there are “no obvious signs of foul play or trauma at this point,” the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Moreover, the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office will ultimately determine the official cause of death, which could provide crucial answers to the many questions surrounding this tragedy.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, spanning over 30,000 acres of pristine Sonoran Desert, is a popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Scottsdale police have requested privacy for Moody’s family and friends during this difficult time as they await more definitive answers about what happened to the young hiker.
