Another big corporation is recalling a popular product over safety concerns that could affect American families.
Specifically, Coca-Cola has pulled Topo Chico Mineral Water from shelves across five states due to potential bacterial contamination.
The company announced the voluntary recall after discovering potential contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria.
The affected products include 16.9-ounce glass bottles sold in 18-packs with lot codes #11A2543, #12A2543, or #13A2541.
They were primarily distributed to roughly 40 retail locations across Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas.
The recall specifically targets products purchased between May 20 and May 29, 2025, at select Costco and Sam’s Club locations.
Although Coca-Cola claims the contamination poses a “very low” health risk to the general public, the bacteria could potentially harm those with weakened immune systems.
The concerning aspect of this situation is that Pseudomonas aeruginosa is not just any bacterium.
It is commonly found in water sources and healthcare settings and can lead to serious infections in vulnerable individuals.
Even more troubling, these bacterial infections are often resistant to antibiotics, making them particularly dangerous for elderly Americans and those with compromised immune systems.
Coca-Cola released a statement, saying:
“The quality and safety of our products is our top priority. Due to a potential contamination of pseudomonas we have voluntarily recalled a limited quantity of Topo Chico Mineral Water 16.9 ounce glass bottle products. All impacted product has been removed from store shelves at the approximate 40 retail locations across Arizona, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas, and no illnesses have been reported.”
While no illnesses have been reported so far, the company is advising consumers who purchased the recalled products to return them for a full refund.
Customers can contact Coca-Cola with concerns or questions about the recall. The company stated that all affected products have been removed from store shelves.
This recall comes just eight years after Coca-Cola acquired the Topo Chico brand for $220 million in 2017.
The Mexican mineral water has gained popularity in recent years, particularly in trendy establishments and as a mixer for cocktails.
