Justice arrives four decades later as authorities have been finally able to crack a 42-year-old cold case murder.
Now 72-year-old Mark Sanfratello has been charged with the 1983 disappearance and murder of then-girlfriend Teresa Peroni.
27-year-old Teresa Peroni vanished on July 4th, 1983, after walking into a wooded area with her then-boyfriend Sanfratello during a party in Selma, Oregon.
The couple had been arguing over alleged infidelity shortly before her disappearance, with records showing the fight erupted “over Peroni having another lover.”
What started as a holiday celebration ended with a young woman gone without a trace.
Initial investigations deemed her disappearance “suspicious in nature,” according to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, but investigators hit roadblocks.
The district attorney’s office acknowledged that at the time, “there was not enough probable cause to move forward with criminal prosecution,” leaving the case unresolved and a family without answers.
A breakthrough came in 1997 when a landowner discovered a human skull near the area where Peroni disappeared.
The skull was sent to a DNA forensics lab at the University of North Texas for analysis, where it was eventually identified as Peroni’s through DNA testing.
Despite this critical discovery, the case remained dormant for years, joining thousands of other unsolved murders across America.
The case received fresh attention in February 2024 when the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office reopened the investigation.
Detectives tracked down witnesses who had not previously come forward and gathered new DNA evidence.
The renewed effort paid off last month when authorities gathered enough evidence to present to a grand jury, which returned a murder indictment against Sanfratello.
Chico Police Department officers located Sanfratello in California and took him into custody “without incident.”
He now awaits extradition to Oregon, where he will face justice for taking Peroni’s life all those years ago.
