(VitalNews.org) – In a new tragedy, the death toll in Syria’s ongoing conflict has surged, claiming over 1,000 civilian lives in just a few days, predominantly targeting the Alawite community.

The latest wave of violence casts a dark shadow over any hopes for peace and stability.

Amid escalating violence, over 1,300 individuals, including civilians, have perished in a mere span of three days.

The chaos erupted following an ambush by Alawite gunmen, which killed 16 government forces in Latakia, leading to violent reprisals.

The new government’s forces, alongside loyalist militants, have been involved in intense and ruthless fighting against those still loyal to deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Heavy clashes have been reported in Syria’s western coastal regions, such as Latakia and Tartus, with the Alawite minority suffering disproportionately.

Massacres and retaliatory attacks against the Alawites unfold unabated, igniting fear and despair among the local populace.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has documented 1,018 deaths, including 745 civilians in what can only be described as sectarian bloodshed.

The dearth of international response only compounds the anguish.

Reports highlight gruesome scenes: “The human rights group said the Alawite gunmen loyal to the former regime do not represent the Alawite community, and many Alawite residents desperately want peace.”

As the human toll rises, the silence from international powers remains deafening and morally troubling.

“More than 1,300 people in Syria have been killed — many believed to be civilians — in the span of three days amid intense fighting between forces associated with Syria’s new government and those loyal to the deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad, according to a human rights group,” NPR reports.

With government and loyalist forces clashing ceaselessly, the basic amenities are rapidly deteriorating.

The affected regions face widespread power outages and water shortages, causing the closure of bakeries and markets, further strangling the already beleaguered Syrian citizens.

Syria’s interim leader, Ahmed Al-Shara, attributes the current violence to Assad loyalists, calling for a cessation of the bloodshed and accountability for those responsible.

The interim government, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, struggles under the weight of maintaining order without an established police force or army, especially in protecting minorities from targeted attacks.

In the absence of intervention, Syrians continue to endure relentless abandonment by the global community, wondering when the pursuit of peace will turn into action.

This tragic chapter is one of the worst since Assad’s toppling, yet it brings no sign of a peaceful resolution.
