United States “Incredibly Concerned” Over Putin’s Meeting with North Korea

(VitalNews.org) – Vladimir Putin, president of Russia, and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un had a recent meeting that has left the United States concerned.

In the meeting, Putin suggested that Russia could supply weapons to North Korea if needed, which has been “incredibly concerning” to United States officials. The two leaders, Jong-un and Putin, signed a defense act that would require each of the countries to provide military assistance if either of them were attacked.

Matthew Miller, a US State Department spokesperson said that Russia supplying weapons “would destabilize the Korean peninsula, of course, and potentially, depending on the type of weapons they provide, violate UN Security Council resolutions that Russia itself has supported.”

Antony Blinken, the United States secretary of State, and South Korea’s foreign ministry said that the agreement between the two is a “serious threat” to stability and peace on the Korean peninsula. Blinken continued to say that the United States would consider “various measures” in response to their defense treaty.

South Korea has stepped in to ask the Russian ambassador to protest the new defense treaty that they signed with North Korea due to increasing tensions. Seoul has recently said that they’d consider sending weapons to Ukraine, which pulled an angry response out of the Russian ambassador, Georgy Zinoviev.

South Korea’s foreign minister met with Zinoviev to call on Russia to immediately stop military operations and partnerships with North Korea. Putin has said that the agreement with North Korea is similar to the West supplying weapons to Ukraine.

“Those who send these weapons to Ukraine think that they are not fighting us, but I said, including in Pyongyang, that we then reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world, with regard to our agreements with North Korea”, Putin said.

He also threatened South Korea that it would be making a “big mistake” if they decided to provide arms to Ukraine and that Russia would act on that decision.
