(VitalNews.org) – Federal prosecutors in the United States have charged three Iranian hackers who allegedly targeted members of former president Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
The alleged hacks we discovered after multiple news sources and journalists spoke out about receiving confidential documents regarding Trump’s campaign from a contact named “Robert.” The new indictment said that these hackers were a part of a “wide ranging” malicious cyber scheme.
The three defendants are from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and include Masoud Jalili, Seyyed Ali Aghamiri, and Yasar Balaghi.
These individuals executed a “wide-ranging hacking campaign that used spearphishing and social engineering techniques to target and compromise the accounts of current and former U.S. government officials, members of the media, nongovernmental organizations, and individuals associated with U.S. political campaigns,” according to prosecutors.
There is a thirty-seven page indictment that was handed down by a grand jury charging the three men with eighteen counts; this includes identity theft, wire fraud, conspiracy to provide material to support a terrorist organization, and hacking conspiracy.
The documents don’t name the campaign defendants that were allegedly targeted, but United States officials have said that Iran has been consistently seeking to undermine Donald Trump and his potential for winning over the White House.
Said Attorney General Merrick Garland, “There are few actors in this world that pose as grave a threat to the national security of the United States as does Iran.” He added, “The message of the U.S. government is clear: the American people, not a foreign power, decide the outcome of our country’s election.”
