UN Chief Plans To Push For More Climate Change Action Amid Summit

(VitalNews.org) – The UN Secretary General, Antonio Gutierres, will attend the Pacific leader’s summit this week in Tonga, and the main focus will be climate change.

The annual meeting will be held with many of the top leaders and political decision-makers in the region. The summit will last for.a week and will consist of these leaders making key decisions including those regarding climate change and regional policing.

Baron Waqa, the forum secretary and former president of Nauru, said “We gather at a pivotal time in our region’s history.” Waqa continued, “We are at the center of global geopolitical interest. We are at the forefront of a battle against climate change.”

Geopolitical tensions have continued to rise and the fight against climate change is a top contributor to many tensions, aside from foreign policies. Many threats that have already arisen as a result of climate change, and, in particular, the Pacific leaders will be looking to build their initiatives for climate related disasters through more financial support.

The UN secretary general said, “The fate of the Pacific depends on limiting the rise in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius.”

He continued, “This region, the Pacific, contributes 0.02% of global emissions. Yet you are on the frontlines of the climate crisis, dealing with extreme weather events from raging tropical cyclones to record ocean heatwaves.”

What is happening in New Caledonia is likely going to be spoken about at the meeting after the French territory was shaken by deadly violence.

This meeting usually attracts a lot of attention especially amid tensions, such as the battle for influence between China and the United States. There have been increasing issues as war continues to intensify and the standards across the globe shift.
