(VitalNews.org) – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump went head to head in their first, and possibly only, debate. The candidates were ultimately tied as they entered the debate with the polls showing a close race, making this debate even more important.
The debate aired live on ABC News from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a key swing state in this election. This was Kamala Harris’ first debate and it was Trump’s second debate as his first was against Joe Biden in June, which is what prompted Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
Harris spoke out on her policies and where she stands on certain topics while Trump seemed to reiterate things he’s said in prior rallies. Trump brought up his claims about abortion, crime, and also spoke out about the belief that he was supposed to win the last election.
Some highlights from the debate include when Donald Trump spread misinformation to make his points and he touched on his supposed win of the 2020 election and his involvement in Project 2025. He also distanced himself from the Capitol Riot attack and incorrectly stated facts such as that crime rates had risen in the U.S.
ABC Moderators were praised for delivering many fact checks about the information being stated in the debate. Harris spoke out on Democrats’ position regarding reproductive rights as Donald Trump spoke against the stance.
The candidates also spoke out about how they both are pushing to improve the economy. Harris said, “I am the only person on this stage that is about lifting up the middle class.” Trump stated that the “best economy” was during his presidency.
Trump continued to speak about immigration while making salacious claims about immigrants. Moderators continued to counter the claims and challenged Trump on the validity of what he was saying.
Harris continued to say that voters should view the speeches for themselves and that Trump hasn’t put the American people first. Moderators pushed Harris to speak about the border policy, an area where Biden and Harris have received the most criticism. In the end, Harris held her own against Trump, even baiting him at some points.
