(VitalNews.org) – A New York Times columnist appeared on CNN and told the host that the Republican Party could “lose everything” in the next election if the Supreme Court decides to strike down access to the abortion pill.
Kara Swisher, a New York Times opinion writer, appeared on “The Chris Wallace Show” on Saturday, Dec. 16, and said a decision by the Supreme Court to strike down the abortion pill will result in massive losses for Republicans in the 2024 presidential election season.
Wallace raised the subject of the Supreme Court’s decision “to jump in and hear the case” on one of the two pills used by women for abortions called mifepristone. He also noted that abortion pills account for “more than half” of abortions carried out in the US, to which Swisher replied, “That is correct.”
“So the Supreme Court, sitting there in their black robes,” Wallace continued, will “decide whether or not” the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) “was right” to open up “more access” to mifepristone. He then asked Swisher if judges should “be second-guessing the FDA” about drug safety.
The drug was first approved in 2000, requiring an in-person prescription and three doctor visits to obtain. Those restrictions were eased in 2016, permitting telemedicine appointment prescriptions and mail delivery of the drug.
Swisher replied that “depending on the decision,” the result “is going to be explosive.” She said that if the pill is banned, the GOP will “lose everything” because of how many women voters find the issue important. Swisher then referenced the recent case of Kate Cox, who was given an exception by a Texas court for an abortion, claiming that such exceptions will continue and become “a problem for the GOP.”
On Wednesday, Dec. 13, the Supreme Court jumped back into the abortion debate by agreeing to look at a decision from a lower court that would restrict access to mifepristone, which conflicts with the FDA’s approval of the drug going back over 20 years.
