Regulated Industries Need Military-Grade Cybersecurity Among Possible Threats

(VitalNews.org) – Organizations are getting things back to normal after the giant IT outage caused by a software update from Crowdstrike. Organizations that were affected by this outage could face potential threats and vulnerabilities as they patch up their security.

Hackers have been exploiting the IT outage by participating in phishing campaigns by posing as legitimate support sources for the affected businesses. Javad Abed, assistant professor of information systems at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School spoke out about the vulnerability.

“When your system is down, it creates the best opportunity for hackers to compromise your data. That’s why multiple layers of security are crucial. Redundancy is key. You need to assume one hundred percent that threats will happen and build your security around zero trust,” Abed said.

The Crowdstrike incident affected multiple important organizations, such as healthcare and banking systems. An issue like this shows that even with cybersecurity’s and advanced capabilities there still can be vulnerabilities to the companies.

“Business owners still see security as a cost. That’s what causes many problems,” Abed continued. “Spending money on security is an investment and shouldn’t be considered a cost.”

Abed teaches about military-grade cybersecurity such as advanced threat intelligence, machine learning, real-time data analytics, and predictive modeling. Traditional cybersecurity methods often focus on detection and response by using robust encryption and authentication methods.

Although military-grade cyber security would be great for businesses, there is still a price that comes with it. This type of security is expensive, there could be capability issues, and there would be a need for specialized personnel.

Organizations that handle sensitive information and store personal information are prime targets for hackers as they have more vulnerability. These organizations would be ideal for upgrading security to a military-grade option.
