Despite facing constant criticism from Congress, DeJoy’s vision to save this crucial service from further financial turmoil stands out.

After almost five years in service, Louis DeJoy informed the Postal Service Board of Governors on February 18, 2025, about his intention to step down as the head of the U.S. Postal Service.

He urged the board to promptly begin the search for a suitable successor to ensure a smooth transition. However, no exact departure date has been unveiled.

DeJoy, appointed during the Trump administration, has been in the position since spring 2020.

He has faced a deluge of criticism for his policies, including network consolidations and a focus on cost-cutting measures.

Despite these challenges, the Board of Governors appreciates his leadership, acknowledging his substantial efforts to modernize and stabilize the agency.

DeJoy’s tenure includes the “Delivering for America” plan’s implementation, a 10-year initiative to boost performance and financial stability.

As part of the plan, the Postal Service aimed to decrease costs, improve efficiency, and adapt to declining mail volumes.

Yet, despite his efforts, the agency reported losses for two consecutive years, casting doubts over its ability to become profitable.

“While there remains much critical work to be done to ensure that the Postal Service can be financially viable as we continue to serve the nation in our essential public service mission, I have decided it is time to start the process of identifying my successor and of preparing the Postal Service for this change,” Louis DeJoy said, cited by KTBX.

First-class mail volume continues to nosedive, shrinking by 3.6% year-over-year.

This decline prompted DeJoy to caution the dire consequences if decisive actions are not taken, warning that without further steps to cut costs, the USPS might face a government bailout.

The Postal Service, which has lost over $100 billion since 2007, must strategize effectively to curb its projected $80 billion in losses over the next decade.

Despite this financial turmoil, DeJoy has been an advocate for purchasing more electric vehicles following a $3 billion appropriation by Congress.

His vision for a greener and more efficient Postal Service faced hurdles, yet some see this as a necessary move toward modernization.

The Board of Governors supported these initiatives under DeJoy’s leadership.

“The Governors greatly appreciate his enduring leadership and his tireless efforts to modernize the Postal Service and reverse decades of neglect,” said governor Amber McReynolds.

As first-class mail’s decline accelerates and the Postal Service grapples with financial challenges, DeJoy’s future successor will have to tackle these pressing issues head-on.
