(VitalNews.org) – The Texas State Board of Education is set to approve a groundbreaking measure to ensure a strong moral foundation for our youngest citizens.
The proposed “Bluebonnet Learning” curriculum integrates Biblical teachings into elementary school lessons.
Developed by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), the new curriculum would allow public schools to incorporate Bible teachings into kindergarten through fifth-grade lessons.
This optional program offers schools additional funding, allowing them to incorporate Biblical wisdom into standard curriculum mandates.
The initiative reflects a broader trend of reintroducing essential religious teachings in public schools across America, just like Oklahoma and Louisiana have done.
Supporter Cindy Asmussen emphasized, “Parents and teachers want a return to excellence.”
The curriculum covers K-5 mathematics and reading, middle school math and algebra, and includes about 10% religious content in its reading lessons.
This carefully assembled material seeks to provide students with a strong moral foundation.
“There’s a line between indoctrination or evangelism and education. In my view, these stories are on the education side and are establishing cultural literacy,” said Houston-area Republican Will Hickman, who supported the Bluebonnet curriculum.
The initiative has gained significant support, with the Texas State Board of Education narrowly approving the proposal in a preliminary 8-7 vote.
Additionally, Governor Greg Abbott’s recent appointment of Leslie Recine played a crucial role in advancing this initiative. Recine is a Republican who supports the state lesson plans.
Although critics argue that the proposal contradicts public schools’ secular mission, supporters assert that biblical stories are a core part of classical learning.
The curriculum’s backers also declared that it is essential for developing well-rounded, morally grounded citizens. It includes teachings such as the Golden Rule and lessons from Genesis.
This initiative aligns with other efforts to reinforce traditional values in Texas schools as Republican lawmakers have also proposed displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms.
