NATO Safeguards Support for Ukraine Amid Biden Election Controversy

(VitalNews.org) – NATO leaders are going to Washington D.C. this week for a summit amid the uncertainty around support for Ukraine.

The summit is for the seventy-fifth anniversary of NATO, and comes as rising skepticism around Biden’s chance at winning for re-election. If Biden doesn’t win this election, there are fears that United States support for Ukraine will change under a Donald Trump presidency.

The meeting will focus on issues including Ukraine’s future with NATO, Ukraine’s success in the war with Russia, and how they are planning an alliance. The United States has been supporting Ukraine since the war began, providing more aid than any other nation. There is current debate over whether or not the United States will continue to provide aid to Ukraine if another president is in office.

Donald Trump was asked, during his most recent debate with Joe Biden, “You’re going to stay in NATO or you’re going to pull out of NATO?” When asked this question, he just shrugged as the response. Although experts have said that Trump is unlikely to pull out of NATO, they are preparing to safeguard their support for Ukraine anyway.

NATO stated that their budget for supporting Ukraine next year would be over forty billion dollars. Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, a senior fellow at The Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said, “I don’t think NATO would explicitly say they’re doing anything because of the politics of a specific member state.”

Montgomery continued, “But I think they do understand that Donald Trump has asked for a higher level of European state leadership within NATO, and contributions within NATO.”
