Migrants Are Costing BILLIONS In Unpaid Medical Bills

(VitalNews.org) – Illegal migrants who have been released into the U.S. are costing taxpayers billions of dollars every year in unpaid medical bills according to a report from the House Homeland Security Committee. Chairman of the Committee Mark Green (R-TN) highlighted the extent of the chaos that has been unleashed onto the nation’s hospitals, saying that the medical needs of legal immigrants and ordinary Americans are being pushed to the back of the line.

The report is especially critical of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), saying that his de facto policy of allowing open borders without any regard for the pressures on existing infrastructure is highly irresponsible. Illegal migrants for the most part have no form of health insurance and so the cost is picked up by public hospitals and thereby passed on to the long-suffering US taxpayer.

Ken Paxton, the Texas Attorney General, said that in 2021 that his state alone had to pay up to $90 million per year to cover the health needs of illegal migrants under the Emergency Medicare program. Meanwhile, in Florida, illegal migrants cost the state hospitals about $312 million, and in Illinois, the costs of a state-wide benefit program for illegal migrants have ballooned from a projected $4 million to almost $1.1 billion.

A single hospital in Arizona, the Yuma Regional Medical Centre, said that taxpayers were landed with $26 million in unpaid medical bills in just one year thanks to illegal migrants who turned up at the hospital expecting free care. The CEO of the hospital, Dr. Robert Trenschel, said that many of the illegal migrants showed up with significant chronic diseases that required long-term care, with some in dire need of cardiac catheterization, dialysis, and heart surgery.

Last year, the Federation for American Immigration Reform reported that the cost of providing healthcare to illegal immigrants across the nation is at least $23 billion every year once the cost of uncompensated medical care is considered.
