(VitalNews.org) – Mark Zuckerberg just recently spoke out about his newest idea in regards to AI, artificial intelligence, which is something that has become a big topic of discussion for businesses that want to get ahead in development.
Zuckerberg committed to building a highly advanced AI system that would be close to human intelligence, or even more intelligent. He also stated that it should be available to the public for use as well.
Zuckerberg said, “This technology is so important and the opportunities are so great that we should open source and make it as widely available as we responsibly can, so everyone can benefit.”
Zuckerberg said that they will be working on building an AI system that is on par with human intelligence or has higher intelligence. He also said that it would be open source, meaning that other developers can have access to it outside of the Meta company.
Many people are saying that this is an “irresponsible approach” and that it could be very dangerous for their team to create something like this without much knowledge or control over the current AI systems we already have available.
A professor of computer science, Dame Wendy Hall, of the University of Southampton said, “The thought of open source AGI being released before we have worked out how to regulate these very powerful AI systems is really very scary. In the wrong hands technology like this could do a great deal of harm. It is so irresponsible for a company to suggest it.”
A director of the Institute for People-Centred AI, Dr Andrew Rogoyski, said, “There are deep and complex arguments about the merits of open-sourcing current AI models, pushing that into the realm of AGI could be world-saving or catastrophic.”
Mark Zuckerberg is not falling back as he says he will continue towards an open-sourcing plan as long as it’s the smart and safe thing to continue doing, but others described open-sourcing these AI systems as “a bit like giving people a template to build a nuclear bomb”.
There is no specific timeline for this AI advancement but Zuckerberg has said that production is underway and the Meta business has made purchase orders for AI chips and other equipment that could be used for the production.
