(VitalNews.org) – When it comes to climate change, natural disasters are increasing and intensifying, which leaves concern for infrastructure.
A Finland company called Block Solutions has invented a Lego-like block made from plastic waste that would interlock and could help with stability during natural disasters.
Markus Silfverberg founded Block Solutions in 2017 and stated that they aimed to provide low-cost construction methods that are sustainable and efficient.
These blocks are made from recycled polypropylene and other plastic products, as well as organic fibers such as wood byproducts. This makes for a lightweight but strong alternative to cinder blocks. Using these blocks is easy as well, because you don’t need any heavy machinery. It requires just a rubber hammer, level, and a ring wrench. It’s said that a two person team can assemble an entire three hundred square foot structure in two and a half hours.
Here, blocks have been used in real world situations such as in Lombok, Indonesia after an earthquake destroyed the city. Silfverberg also collaborated with Classroom of Hope to construct a five-room school in just six days.
These projects have helped to provide immediate shelter and have also removed tons of plastic waste from the environment. This goes to show the massive benefits of utilizing this as a constructor.
These blocks also work well in areas known for earthquakes as it helps to enhance safety during earthquakes and they’re less likely to cause harm if they do collapse.
Block Solutions has plans to expand their operations across the globe, and they already have plans for the United States as the demand for these blocks continues to grow.
