(VitalNews.org) – It appears Nike is attempting to conjure up an illusion that former football player Colin Kaepernick, who controversially protested police violence by refusing to take part in the national anthem in 2016, has a shot to revive his career in the sport. Still, some other former players aren’t standing for it.
Nike recently released a workout video of Kaepernick filmed at their headquarters showing the ex-football player throwing some passes to other NFL stars, including CeeDee Lamb and Najee Harris. The players accompanying Kaepernick had only positive things to say about Kaepernick’s passing ability, of course, but other football veterans who saw the video weren’t buying it.
Terence Garvin, an NFL veteran, and linebacker for six years, blasted Nike and Kaepernick for presenting a false image of the player. Garvin appeared on The Arthur Moats Experience with Deke podcast with fellow veteran linebacker for the Steelers, Arthur Moats. Garvin made remarks about the video directed toward Kaepernick, saying “Senior prom was… six years ago.” He then told Kaepernick that “it’s over,” and said the former player is “still trying to be the prom queen.”
Garvin also criticized Nike. He said the company “mandated” that Lamb and Najee “be out there” in the video.
Moats also shot down any dreams of returning to the game for Kaepernick, noting how long the activist “has been out of the game” and pointing out that there are plenty of other up-and-coming players “who could do the job.”
Kaepernick hasn’t played professional football since 2017 after he notoriously took a knee during the national anthem for the stated purpose of raising awareness about racial issues in the country. He then spent the entirety of former President Donald Trump’s presidency shaping his career around activism, and even launched a lawsuit against the NFL, accusing them of colluding to bump him out. The case was dropped in 2019 after Kaepernick reached a settlement with the league.
So far, Kaepernick hasn’t responded to Garvin and Moats’s criticism.
