Immigrant Bus Ride Takes Life of 3-Year-Old Girl

(VitalNews.org) – Last month, a 3-year-old died on a bus traveling to Chicago from Texas carrying a load of immigrants. Now, an autopsy report released on Thursday revealed that she died of bacterial infection along with other factors like malnutrition.

Jismary Alejandra Barboza Gonzalez died on August 10 of infection and aspiration pneumonia which resulted in diarrhea, vomiting, low electrolytes, and brain swelling, according to Troy Cannon, an Illinois coroner for Marion County. The child was tended to, but her condition worsened as the trip went on until she eventually died.

According to witness reports, Jismary started having symptoms and feeling sick shortly before boarding a bus in Brownsville, Texas. She was allowed on the bus because it was only a mild fever at the time.

Over the last couple of years, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has been sending migrants out of the Lone Star State on buses and to cities in other states around the country that have openly declared themselves as sanctuaries. New York City, like Chicago, is one such “sanctuary city” taking in migrants. New York Mayor Eric Adams, while calling for more federal aid for the Big Apple, recently declared that the crisis may just destroy the city if something isn’t done about it.

Along with trying to thin out the number of border-crossers in Texas, Abbott’s also been trying to slow down their entry, employing such tactics as a floating barrier in the Rio Grande River, which he’s just been ordered by the federal government to move.

Whether it’s getting across the border or being sent around the country after entering the US, migrants are at great risk on their journey. Many have drowned in the Rio Grande trying to cross, and a body was found near the barrier even after it was installed. Another dangerous crossing location is the Tucson sector in Arizona, which kills many attempting to cross because of heatstroke and dehydration.

A relative of the child said that she and the family left Colombia in May for the United States in order to start a new life.
