House Expecting to Pass Funding Package to Avoid Government Shutdown

(VitalNews.org) – The U.S House will vote on a three-month government funding package to avert a government shutdown set to begin next week.

This funding package is expected to pass in the House, despite pushback from some Republicans. Mike Johnson, House Speaker, revealed the plan last week after his original funding package was denied. The original bill combined a six-month funding measure with the SAVE Act, a controversial proposal that would require voters to show proof of citizenship when they register to vote.

Johnson announced that a “very narrow, bare-bones continuing resolution” is what they will move forward with to extend funding for the government until the end of December.

Said Johnson, “Since we fell a bit short of the goal line, an alternative plan is now required.” He continued, “While this is not the solution any of us prefer, it is the most prudent path forward under the present circumstances. As history has taught and current polling affirms, shutting the government down less than 40 days from a fateful election would be an act of political malpractice.”

The bill will also include an additional two hundred million for the Secret Service for “operations necessary to carry out protective operations including the 2024 Presidential Campaign and National Special Security Events.” This is expected after the failures associated with the Secret Service and its resources that led to two assassination attempts against Donald Trump.

“I don’t think there’s any question that House Democrats want to govern,” Pete Aguilar, the House Democratic caucus chair, said. “You’ll see tomorrow how many House Democrats versus House Republicans vote to avoid a shutdown.”

Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky spoke out against the package. “I would encourage people not to vote for this CR. There’s still time to do other things. And if we were going to do something, we should do a full-year CR. Why do we want to set up a shutdown crisis the week before Christmas?”

Many officials have been frustrated at the delay in a funding package and at the particular details in this package that is soon to pass. Many feel that it doesn’t cover all the bases and some have stated that this would put the government in a potentially defunded state right before holiday recess.
