(VitalNews.org) – Using the entertainment industry as a vehicle for political propaganda is far from a new concept, and some believe this strategy is now being employed by Hollywood to promote pro-abortion views.
A popular drama series on AppleTV+ called “The Morning Show” is the latest spearhead of a trend conservatives claim has been growing inside the entertainment industry to normalize abortion and vilify those who oppose the practice. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon, who star in the show, are also both well-known and open advocates of abortion.
Aniston’s support has long extended on and off-screen. An example of the two worlds colliding was her response to the passing of the Texas Heartbeat Act in 2021. She shared a clip on her Instagram page from the show “Friends,” a hit sitcom Aniston starred in from 1994 to 2004, in which her character says “I repeat: no uterus, no opinion.” Anniston frantically claimed gay marriage and birth control were next on the chopping block after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022.
Witherspoon’s positions on abortion have also been public. She tweeted in 2019 that she was “beyond upset” about the new restrictions passed in Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi. She called the bans an “unconstitutional and abhorrent… attack on women’s fundamental rights” that shouldn’t be tolerated. Like Aniston and many other celebrities, she condemned the heartbeat bill in Texas, and her reactions were similar when Roe v. Wade was overturned.
After the controversial Supreme Court ruling, dramas featuring abortion plots have been on the rise, such as Never Rarely, Sometimes Always in 2020, and even a comedy about abortion called Unpregnant. In 2022, Call Jane came out and covered the history of an underground abortion network before the days of Roe v. Wade, painting a heroic narrative that casts those who fought for abortion as heroes and their pro-life opposition as evil villains.
In the newest season of The Morning Show, Aniston’s character (a journalist) and Witherspoon’s character (a news anchor) cover the 2022 Supreme Court’s ruling as well as a story about a young woman who smuggles abortion pills over the Mexican border for Americans. Just like in Call Jane, the people providing abortions illegally are portrayed as the story’s heroes and those opposing them as the bad guys.
