(VitalNews.org) – Elon Musk, the charismatic owner of Twitter, has announced that the words “cis” or “cisgender” will no longer be allowed on Twitter. This is because he considers them to be a slur on a protected characteristic, that of gender identity. The announcement has been met with outrage on Twitter, with the hard-left users deriding the so-called free speech platform that Musk is promoting. But others see it as no different from banning the use of the N-word to describe people of color, which is a widely accepted position to take in order to avoid causing unnecessary offense.
The word “cis” in Latin means the opposite of “trans,” so, for example, a person who is a biological male and who identifies as a male is frequently described as “cisgender” by radical trans activists, and nearly always in a derogatory context. Musk has said that repeated, targeted comments of this nature on Twitter will be considered harassment, and accounts that are deemed to have harassed others will receive at the very minimum a temporary suspension, which could be made permanent if the harassing behavior continues.
The author JK Rowling has backed Musk, saying that the use of “cisgender” and “cis” has become weaponized in the ideological onslaught by radical trans activists, signifying adherence to the concept of gender identity as a sacrosanct absolute that cannot and must not be gainsaid. She said that everyone has the right to believe in unprovable concepts such as gender identity and also the right to assert that one’s body does not conform to this unprovable concept, but similarly, the rest of us have a right to differ and to refuse to adopt such ideological jargon.
Rowling has found herself in trouble with radical trans activists before, deriding those who refuse to define “women” as adult human females, and mocking the use of the phrase “people who menstruate”, saying “I’m fairly certain there used to be a word for such people. Wimple? Womble? Somebody please help me out here.”
