Haiti Prime Minister Steps Down Amid Gang Violence?!

(VitalNews.org) – Ariel Henry, Haiti’s Prime Minister, has stepped down from his role as Prime Minister of Haiti due to the gang violence that has swept the country and the calls for his resignation. Henry is currently in Puerto Rico and says he will formally step down once he has an intermittent replacement to transition to.

Henry said in a video, “For more than a week, our country has experienced an increase in acts of violence of all kinds perpetrated against the population: assassinations, attacks against law enforcement, looting, systematic destruction of public and private buildings.”

Leaders of Haiti are organizing a presidential council of seven and plan on installing a new interim Prime Minister to lead Haiti, however, no details have been released regarding who this might be. Even from outside the country, Henry pleaded with Haitian citizens, saying, “I’m asking all Haitians to remain calm and do everything they can for peace and stability to come back as fast as possible.”

Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has nearly been overtaken by gang members. Many are worried about how exactly they’ll be able to persuade the gang members to stand down and what exactly they can offer them to do so.

Robert Fatton, a Haitian politics expert, said “Even if you have a different kind of government, the reality is that you need to talk to the gangs. You can’t suppress them.” Haitian officials will need to come up with a game plan to get them to drop their weapons.

Jimmy “Barbeque” Chérizier, a former police officer and Haiti’s most powerful gang leader said that if a transition into a new government was going to be dictated by outside entities, then this would “plunge Haiti into further chaos”.

Haitian gangs stormed the city by setting fire to police stations and storming prisons as well as storming the capital. The resignation of Prime Minister Henry might not help as much with the gang issues in the country.

Henry’s government practices were considered corrupt because of their decision to not hold an election; they have not had an election since 2016.
