Gaza Aid Warehouses Robbed, Thwarting Humanitarian Aid

(VitalNews.org) – Thousands of desperate people broke into and looted multiple warehouses carrying aid supplies for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip displaced or injured in the ongoing siege by Israel.

According to a report from The Associated Press, at least three dozen large trucks entered Gaza carrying critical aid resources including medicine, food, and water. The trucks came in through Egypt by the Rafa Crossing, which was meant to incentivize more Palestinians to move to the southern part of the Gaza Strip as Israel continues to law siege on the northern part in their efforts to weed out the Palestinian militant organization Hamas.

The Israeli offensive operation in Gaza comes as a result of a coordinated attack by Hamas on October 7 that killed an estimated 1,400, according to Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) retaliation has since resulted in at least 8,000 more deaths.

Before the aid resources could be properly distributed, thousands of desperate Palestinians broke into the warehouses and looted the supplies. A United Nations Reliefs and Works Agency director in Gaza said that the incident is a bad sign that the social order in the area is breaking down as Palestinians “are scared, frustrated, and desperate.”

A UN spokesperson said that at least four warehouses were looted last Saturday, one of which contained at least 80 tons of food. The Israeli government says they will allow more aid into Gaza. According to the UN World Food Program, at least 40 trucks a day must arrive in Gaza to keep up with the needs of those Palestinians displaced over the last month.

President Joe Biden has already spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a few times, and has emphasized that “the flow of humanitarian assistance” into Gaza needs “to immediately and significantly increase.”

As Israel increases their efforts to take down Hamas, they’re also facing growing pressure internationally to cease fire, and the issue is driving a wedge between members within both major US political parties.
