(VitalNews.org) – Jobs Aviation completed an over five hundred mile nonstop flight with its hydrogen-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. With this vehicle, water vapor is the only byproduct, and it is a huge milestone in emissions-free travel.

The hydrogen-electric flight is a huge improvement from their battery powered vehicle. During testing for their battery powered aircraft, their record was only one hundred and fifty miles. The flying distance of the hydrogen-electric vehicle shows true promise for how this advancement could change things.

The aircraft includes a cryogenic fuel tank which stores almost ninety pounds of liquid nitrogen. The fuel cell system was developed by H2Fly and generates an electrochemical reaction between oxygen and hydrogen. A small battery is included to help power during landing and takeoff.

This breakthrough could change air travel since it can travel from place to place without an airport. Joby’s CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, has said that he can see a future where passengers can fly between cities with minimal environmental impact.

Although hydrogen fuel cells are showing positivity for the aviation market, there are still challenges for infrastructure and regulatory approvals. However, Joby’s business with battery electric vehicles will help them and set the stage for their hydrogen electric advancement as well.

Joby Aviation’s flight is a huge deal in sustainable aviation by showing that hydrogen can go farther than electric aircraft can. This in itself is opening up huge possibilities for clean, regional air travel. The company will continue to develop their aircraft in hopes that it can be available for people to travel through air seamlessly.
