Florida Says “It’s Okay” to Send Unvaccinated Kids to School

Florida Schools Defies CDC, Says Bring Kids Unvaccinated

(VitalNews.org) – A Florida Surgeon General, Joseph Ladapo, has gone against a CDC recommendation by telling parents to bring their children to school unvaccinated.

Measles spread through a Manatee Bay Elementary school in South Florida, but Ladapo sent a letter to parents encouraging them to bring their kids to school unvaccinated even with the outbreak happening. In the letter, he said that the Department of Health is looking “to parents or guardians to make decisions about school attendance.”

“This is not a parental rights issue,” said Scott Rivkees, who is Florida’s former surgeon general. “It’s about protecting fellow classmates, teachers, and members of the community against measles, which is a very serious and very transmissible illness.”

According to pharmacists, most people who are not vaccinated for Measles, but are exposed to Measles will get the virus. This group of people is very vulnerable to Measles and it can include infants who are too young for a vaccine, others who can’t be vaccinated, or those who aren’t vaccinated due to choice.

The CDC, against Ladapo’s judgment, has said that students must stay home from school for three weeks. Measles is a virus that spreads by tiny droplets through the air and on surfaces so in this case, students can be exposed simply by sitting in the same classroom or cafeteria as someone who is exposed.

President of the Florida chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Thresia Gambon, said, “I don’t know why the health department wouldn’t follow the CDC recommendations. Measles is so contagious. It is very worrisome.”

According to reports, only one-fourth of Florida counties have reached the 95% threshold for being “well protected against Measles.”

Broward County is one county that saw an outbreak of measles. The health department in Broward has been offering Measles vaccines since the outbreak started as people are far less likely to contact Measles if they get vaccinated even after exposure.
