(VitalNews.org) – Murders have dropped more than eleven percent between 2022 and 2023, the largest single-year decline in over twenty years, according to FBI data that was recently released.
When looking at the broad spectrum of crime, the data stated that crime decreased by three percent. The data was released to contradict the Republican party for the claims they’ve made regarding the rate of murders and crime. Donald Trump recently made a claim on his campaign trail that without him as president, crime has increased and become out of control.
The FBI released their Annual Crime in the Nation data which showed that rape decreased by over nine percent, property crime decreased by over two percent, and burglary decreased by over seven percent.
Although there were many decreases in the data released, there was an increase of twelve percent for car theft, and shoplifting went back up and returned to levels that were seen prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The FBI stated that this data covers full-year members from “every city agency covering a population of one million or more inhabitants.” Their data went against Republican claims, especially from Trump, that the crime rates have risen heavily since he’s been out of office.
With this data, the FBI said that over sixteen participating law enforcement agencies submitted reports involving over eleven thousand crimes and thirteen thousand offenses.
“Hate crimes are uniquely harmful, traumatizing both the individual and their community,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League. He continued to say that it’s encouraging to see law enforcement reporting hate crimes but that “we still have a long way to go toward ensuring comprehensive data collection that provides a more accurate picture of the lived experience of targeted communities across the country.”
“Data drives policy, and without having a complete understanding of the problem, we cannot effectively address this significant surge in hate violence,” he added.
