FACT: They Tortured Him

(VitalNews.org) – Former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan’s disturbing account of torture in a Russian labor camp exposes the brutal tactics employed by Vladimir Putin’s regime against American patriots.

Whelan, who served his country honorably as a Marine, found himself entangled in a web of false accusations and political manipulation when he was arrested in Moscow in 2018.

The Russians fabricated espionage charges against him in a secret trial, sentencing him to 16 years in prison.

During his imprisonment, Whelan had to endure torment at the hands of his captors.

In a recent interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” he revealed the horrifying details of his ordeal.

“The Russian government wanted to put pressure on the United States by treating me badly. Sleep deprivation is considered torture,” Whelan stated, exposing the cruel tactics employed by Putin’s men.

The torture Whelan experienced was relentless and calculated. At Moscow’s infamous Lefortovo Prison, the FSB (the successor to the KGB) kept bright lights on 24/7 in Whelan’s cell, making sleep nearly impossible.

But the torment did not stop there. Whelan described the nightmare that awaited him.

“At the labor camp for four years, they would come every two hours to my bed at night, and they would wake me up,” Whelan recounted.

“They’d shine a light in my face and take a picture. At first, they would ask me, you know, what my name was, things like that. But it turned into harassment,” he added.

“From Day One, I was being told that there would be a trade, a political solution to this situation. But as it dragged on, it did play with my mind,” Whelan went on.

Whelan was also denied access to books, mail and even the comfort of his own language as the Russians pressured him to speak Russian in clear violation of international law.

Adding insult to injury, Whelan was forced to watch as other Americans, like WNBA player Brittney Griner, were released in prisoner swaps while he remained captive.

The ordeal has left deep scars on Whelan. He now suffers from PTSD and struggles to sleep for extended periods.

Still, Whelan is determined to turn his suffering into a warning for others. He plans to write a book about his experiences.

He stated, “I think it’s important for me to share what’s happened to me and why it happened, so that others in, you know, similar lifestyles, traveling the world, working abroad, don’t fall into the same trap that I did.”
