(VitalNews.org) – A record-breaking arctic storm has been surfacing in the United States and experts are helping us know how to prepare for freezing temperatures and very cold winds.

We’ve seen a recent arctic storm pass over the United States causing some places to have 30 degrees below zero temperatures. It’s also delayed events such as an NFL playoff game, and we’ve seen blizzard conditions throughout the country.

As of Sunday, 26 states are still under wind chill alerts and it’s not expected to change anytime soon. Chicago temperatures have reached 30 degrees below zero, forcing the city to turn to its “emergency operation plan for extreme cold” while preparing people with crucial information on how to stay safe in cold weather.

Experts are saying to keep the temperatures in your home consistent throughout the day and the night time. If you’re leaving town or leaving for days at a time, you should set it to a minimum of 55 degrees. They’re also saying that you should open cabinet doors and let the warm air circulate through those cabinets to ensure pipes don’t freeze. You can also leave your garage doors closed if you have water pipes or heaters in there, as well as let your faucets drip slightly to keep water moving in your pipes.

A National Weather Service meteorologist stated that those who are not dressed appropriately for the weather could be susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia. Symptoms of frostbite include numbness, white or grayish skin, or skin that feels unusually firm or wax-like.

Experts also said that you should “not rub your hands because if you have frostbite then rubbing actually causes tissue damage.” They also stated that if you feel like you have frostbite then you should keep the area covered because exposing frostbitten skin to the cold can cause nerve damage.

Low body temperature can make you move slower and also react slower. They said, “This makes hypothermia especially dangerous because a person may not know that it’s happening and won’t be able to do anything about it.”

Experts say that it’s essential to keep your head covered since that is where the majority of the heat escapes from. They also suggested layering up as the best way to stay warm so you can simply zip and unzip when needed. However, sweating and then exposing yourself to the cold can cause huge issues.

They’re final and most important note was that “Kids, especially babies, lose a disproportionate amount of heat from their head — that’s why you want to have a hat on their head when you’re out there. Older people are more at risk simply because it is more difficult to regulate our core body temperature as we get older.”
