(VitalNews.org) – Governor Ron DeSantis is pushing for a “parental rights” agenda that wasn’t popular with the Republicans, but he’s still pushing for it in Florida’s schools. This movement could have a huge impact on public education even after DeSantis leaves office.
He has endorsed twenty-three school board candidates across fourteen counties. This is part of an agenda to go against what he called “woke” ideology in public schools. This subject has been the topic of debate for politics as both sides struggle to get the vote of suburban women.
The parental rights movement highlights complaints about classroom instruction on identity, race, and history. Many moms who are in politics or have shared their opinions have been scrutinized due to their view on this agenda.
Katie Blaxberg is one mom running for the Pinellas County School Board and has been trolled online and scrutinized for her views. Blaxberg has found herself the target of Moms For Liberty, a conservative group that has been posting information about her and her children online.
Said Blaxberg, “I don’t want to feel unsafe in my house. And I don’t want my children to feel unsafe in my house, just because I’ve decided to run for public office.”
There have been a lot of different opinions on issues such as books in school libraries that have sexually explicit language or pornography in them. This has sparked a political storm that has distracted from the mission of student achievement.
Conservative activists and elected officials are looking to win majorities in local school districts on these issues.
