(VitalNews.org) – Liberal media darling Clarissa Ward found herself in hot water while attempting to report on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

A Sudanese militia in North Darfur arrested Ward and her CNN crew as they were suspected of being spies.

The team was held captive for 48 hours by a group led by a man referred to as “the general.”

Despite claims of months of negotiations and permissions to enter the area, the crew’s presence was clearly unwelcome.

“We had come to Darfur to report on the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, never intending to become part of the story,” Ward stated.

“But months of planning came apart in moments when we were detained by a militia led by the man everyone called the general,” she added.

The situation in Sudan is undeniably dire. Over 10 million people have been displaced and 26 million face severe hunger.

Many of the soldiers holding Ward captive were reportedly children, a reminder of the complex issues plaguing the region.

The fact that the militia initially suspected that the CNN team were spies highlights the deep-seated mistrust of Western intervention in the region.

At one point, Ward bravely pleaded for her life, revealing she was a mother. “Please, we are very frightened,” she said.

After a while, the militia commander ultimately decided on their release, saying, “We thought you were spies but now you can go home.”

While Ward and her team were ultimately released unharmed, the incident raises important questions about the role of Western media in foreign conflicts.
