China is Experiencing a Lack of Chipmaking Tools for Advanced Ideas

(VitalNews.org) – China is trying to counter the United States’ chip restrictions, but it has faced many issues as it attempts to manufacture key equipment.

In order for China to make the most advanced semiconductors, they require lithography scanners to print the circuit designs onto microchips. ASML, a Netherlands-based company, is the only one in the world that can make those machines, but the Dutch government has banned the sale of its most advanced equipment to China.

Being able to build these machines is a huge piece of China’s push to develop its semiconductor industry. China just announced its latest lithography scanner that would support a resolution of sixty-five nanometers, which is an improvement from its previous version.

Leping Huang, managing director and chief technology analyst at Huatai Securities said that it would take a “large technology breakthrough” from their current model to the latest immersive deep ultraviolet lithography machines.

ASML is still selling what it can to China and their revenue from sales has increased from the sales to Chinese clients. John Lee, director at East-West Futures, has said that this increase shows China “doesn’t think they have a viable domestic alternative yet.”

“Recreating advanced lithography systems that took ASML decades to develop and commercialize is a tall order for any individual Chinese company,” said Partner and Senior VP for China at DGA Group, Paul Triolo.

Experts have stated that funding the development of these key technologies can only do so much and there needs to be a sufficient and skilled workforce to execute.
