(VitalNews.org) – A tour bus crash has left dozens of people injured and caused massive traffic disruptions on Interstate 490 near Rochester, New York.

The crash happened near Union Street in Chili, New York, when the tour bus overturned on the westbound lanes of I-490.

The incident forced a complete shutdown of the highway in both directions between Exits 3 and 4.

Although the exact number of passengers remains unknown, 28 people were hospitalized, including a child and an individual in critical condition.

Emergency responders, including firefighters and paramedics, rushed to the scene to assist those trapped in the overturned vehicle.

The extent of the injuries remains unclear, but the fact that several ambulances arrived suggests that the situation was potentially serious.

In the meantime, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police are currently investigating the crash.

“It was surreal, it was things you trained for, but something you don’t expect to see in real life,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter.

Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement, saying, “To allow first responders to do their jobs, the I-490 is closed in both directions between exits 4 and 3, and drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.”

“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all involved in this serious incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” she added.

In the meantime, motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
