(VitalNews.org) – In a stunning turn of events, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for Attorney General has withdrawn his name from consideration.

Staunch Trump ally and conservative firebrand Matt Gaetz took a step back after intense scrutiny and alleged political plotting.

Gaetz announced his withdrawal following meetings with GOP senators. He cited concerns that his confirmation process would become a “distraction” to the Trump-Vance administration.

The President-elect nominated the former Florida congressman after he resigned from Congress on November 13.

However, Gaetz’s nomination was impacted by a series of past investigations and allegations, including a sex trafficking probe and a House Ethics Committee investigation.

These accusations, which Gaetz has firmly denied, included claims of drug abuse, sexual misconduct, payments for sex and allegations that involved a 17-year-old girl.

It is worth noting that the Department of Justice did not bring charges against Gaetz after investigating these allegations.

However, the House Ethics Committee is still probing Gaetz for sexual misconduct, drug use, accepting improper gifts and obstructing government investigations.

Amid the scrutiny, a GOP aide said, “This is all a play to become a martyr to boost [Gaetz’s 2026] gubernatorial prospects [in Florida].”

Despite the controversy surrounding his nomination, Gaetz maintains strong support from Trump and his base.

The President-elect himself expressed appreciation for Gaetz’s efforts and stated, “Matt has a wonderful future, and I look forward to watching all of the great things he will do!”

Gaetz is a law school graduate from William & Mary with a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University.

A polarizing figure in Washington, he played a key role in ousting Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
