(VitalNews.org) – Arrests for illegals crossing the border from Mexico have dropped over thirty percent, which is the lowest it’s been in almost four years. This drop is a direct result of asylum being suspended temporarily in the country.
The Border Patrol stated that they made over fifty-six thousand arrests last month which is down from eighty-five thousand arrests the month before, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection data.
Asylum was temporarily halted because arrests at the border hit two thousand five hundred a day, which was the threshold. This was due to a lack of deportation flights which prevented authorities from turning down people.
Troy Miller, a CBP Commissioner, said, “In July, our border security measures enhanced our ability to deliver consequences for illegal entry.”
The numbers were in line with preliminary estimates and gave the Democratic Party some breathing room as there was intense criticism over how the party was handling the border issues.
White House spokesman Angelo Fernandez Hernandez said, “The Biden-Harris Administration has taken effective action, and the Republicans continue to do nothing.”
The numbers that were seen at the border were increasing and were some of the largest numbers seen in history. Over seven hundred and sixty thousand people came through the border using the CBP One online appointment system. Following this, over five hundred thousand people came from Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela under a separate policy.
The CBP said, “The Department of Homeland Security is working to restart applications processing as quickly as possible, with appropriate safeguards.”
The CBP said that it will expand areas where non-Mexican migrants can apply online for appointments to get U.S. asylum.
