(VitalNews.org) – In the aftermath of the bombshell fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Joe Biden stated that the moment was a “moment of historic opportunity” for the people in Syria.
Speaking from the White House, Biden declared the collapse of Assad’s government “a fundamental act of justice.”
However, his words failed to address concerns about the potential consequences of the power vacuum left in the embattled country.
The offensive that toppled Assad was led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an Islamist group with past ties to al-Qaeda.
This fact alone should raise alarm bells about the true nature of this so-called “opportunity” for Syria.
Biden declared:
“At long last, the Assad regime has fallen. This regime brutalized and tortured and killed literally hundreds of thousands of innocent Syrians. A fall of the regime is a fundamental act of justice. It’s a moment of historic opportunity for the long-suffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.”
Biden also committed to keeping U.S. troops in eastern Syria, reportedly for stability. However, some analysts argue against funneling funds to another crisis abroad.
“We’re clear-eyed about the fact that ISIS will try to take advantage of any vacuum to reestablish its capabilities and create a safe haven,” Biden claimed. “We will not let that happen.”
Biden’s administration plans to engage with “all Syrian groups” through a UN-backed process, potentially giving extremist factions power.
Additionally, Biden pledged humanitarian relief and support for Syria’s neighbors, including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, and Israel, raising questions about how much of the aid would fall on American taxpayers’ shoulders.
Biden also said that “some of the rebel groups that took down Assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses. But as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words, but their actions.”
As America faces its own crises at home, including an open southern border and skyrocketing inflation, Biden’s recent focus on Syria has been swiftly criticized.
