On June 13, 2025, in Yelewata, Fulani militants launched a brutal assault on unprotected civilians, tearing apart families in leaps of terror, while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”
This calculated violence aims at purging Christians, echoing alarming concerns voiced by church leaders around the globe.
During the terrifying raid, militants indiscriminately killed displaced families seeking refuge in shelters.
As over 500 people were fast asleep, they were ambushed by the extremist group, resulting in 200 heart-wrenching deaths, making it the deadliest attack Nigeria has witnessed in recent times.
Father Ukuma Jonathan Angbianbee, who narrowly escaped the gruesome scene, recounted the horrific ordeal and the overwhelming loss of life, reports the Catholic News Agency.
“What I saw was truly gruesome. People were slaughtered. Corpses were scattered everywhere,” he said.
The attackers, identified as Fulani herdsmen, first stormed St. Joseph’s Church.
Thanks to local law enforcement, who heroically repelled them, they moved their bloodthirsty agenda to the market square, minimizing the targeting of innocent worshippers.
Yet, despite the valiant efforts of few, the militants succeeded in their mission elsewhere, as they set ablaze buildings and brutally attacked families.
“Some 200 people were murdered, with extraordinary cruelty,” said Pope Leo XIV, condemning the violence, and highlighting the world’s desperate need for peace and security in Nigeria.
Church leaders are urging global powers to take decisive action and halt the persecution of Christians before it’s too late.
The delay in government response has sparked heated criticism, adding to growing concerns over official negligence in defending vulnerable Christian communities.
Past records don’t lie: nearly 10,000 Christians have been killed by radical factions over two years, prompting serious questions about governmental inaction.
Double standards from international media, overlooking the unapologetic assault on Christian lives, remain baffling.
The horrific atrocity in Benue is only the tip of the iceberg, painted with blood and agony.
It is crucial to recognize such atrocities and not brush aside an alarming indication of a broader agenda against Christians in Nigeria.
